Corrieshalloch Gorge and Falls of Measach

Corrieshalloch Gorge and Falls of Measach

This spectacular mile-long gorge, 61m (200 ft) deep, is one of the finest examples in Britain of a box canyon. The river which carved this channel through hard metamorphic rock plunges 46m (150 ft) over the Falls of Measach.

A suspension bridge a little way downstream from the falls was built by John Fowler (1817-98), joint designer of the Forth Railway Bridge. From here you can look down into this spectacular, steep-sided slot gorge.

Meltwaters created Corrieshalloch Gorge shortly before glaciers left the area. Its 60m deep with near vertical walls and in places its very narrow, only 10m across at the lip. The inaccessible ravine supports a rich and varied Atlantic bryophyte flora. The River Droma flows through the gorge in a series of waterfalls, the largest of which is the 46m Falls of Measach. Further downstream, a viewing platform provides an excellent vantage point looking up towards the falls.

Thanks to a magnificent response to a public appeal to fund the project, the National Trust for Scotland has been able to re-open the bridge and viewing area at Corrieshalloch Gorge to the public and improve access to the site with a new car parking area on the Dundonnell Road and an upgraded path network around the Gorge. A new viewing platform has been installed giving spectacular views into the gorge and unrivalled views of the Falls of Measach and the bridge above. The rock supporting the suspension bridge has also been strengthened.

The second footpath, due for completion by the end of May, is a circular walk of 1.1km along the top of the reserve offering spectacular viewpoints along Strath Broom towards Ullapool. The path then descends to join Lady Fowler's Fern Walk, (part of the original designed landscape of the Braemore Estate), running along the gorge edge towards the suspension bridge, before returning to the car park.
