Balmerino Abbey

Balmerino Abbey

Enjoy a fascinating visit to these ruins of a Cistercian Monastery, founded in 1229.

Home for over three hundred years to a devout order of Cistercian monks, the Abbey was ravaged by the Reformation in the sixteenth century, converted to a barony and occupied by generations of the Lords of Balmerino. Today it is a tranquil spot for a picnic, a spiritual hub for the community, and a place of historical significance for Scotland.

It has been regarded as one of the National Trust for Scotland’s ‘wee gems’ since it was gifted to the conservation charity by the Earl of Dundee in 1936.

Recently, the Trust removed an intrusive stone cairn from the abbey nave, replacing it with a new interpretation panel close to the entrance. From here, visitors can now follow a fascinating guided walk through the ruins using printed leaflets available at the property.
