Maes Howe

Maes Howe

The finest megalithic tomb in the British Isles, with a large mound covering a stone-built passage and a large burial chamber with cells in the walls. Of Neolithic date, broken into in Viking times by people who carved extensive runic inscriptions on the walls. Part of The Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site.

Admission, shop and refreshments at the nearby 19th-century Tormiston Mill.

Access to the chambered tomb of Maes Howe is along a path wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs. Entrance to the tomb is suitable for visitors using a
wheelchair but can cause difficulties for elderly people or visitors who have difficulty in bending. Visitors using wheelchairs have access to the exhibition and video display area on the ground floor of Tormiston Mill.
