Bishop's & Earl's Palaces

Bishop's & Earl's Palaces

The Bishop & Earl's Palace is a hall-house of 12th-century date, later much altered, with a round tower built by Bishop Reid in 1541-48. A later addition was made by the notorious Patrick Stewart, Earl of Orkney, who built the adjacent Earl's Palace between 1600 and 1607 in a splendid Renaissance style.

The combination of a large number of steps and a gravel path make the Bishop's Palace unsuitable for people using wheelchairs or with limited mobility but it can be viewed from the outside. There is reasonable access to the ground floor of the Earl's Palace. There are two small, wide steps to the exhibition and one step to the video display. The grounds have tarmac paths with some steps which are unsuitable for visitors using wheelchairs.
