Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement, Sumburgh

Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement, Sumburgh

At Sumburgh Head, 22M S of Lerwick on the A970.
An extraordinarily important site with a complex of ancient settlements within three acres. The oldest is a Bronze Age village of oval stone huts. Above this there are an Iron Age broch and wheelhouses, and higher still an entire Viking settlement. On the crest of the mount is a house built around 1600. Visitor centre has displays on prehistoric life and history of the site.

Almost all of the site is accessible with a little care and patience. The gates need to be lifted off by the steward. There are cobbled paths on the site but the
grass verges can be used in dry weather. The path to the broch and wheelhouse area is too narrow for wheelchairs but access is possible for more mobile visitors. Seating is available within the grounds. The interpretation centre houses a hands-on display of local materials traditionally used on site including wool, stone, slate and bone.
