If you are searching for a unique island experience, then visit the home of Flora MacDonald, where you will find a very small crafts business where the accent is on quality rather than quantity.
Flora was born and brought up in the island of North UIst and is a Gaelic speaker. She runs workshops and gives talks on indigenous island crafts. This is also a unique experience because you will collect natural materials and make dyes in the traditional manner. This will cost £25 for a morning or £50 for the whole day.
The craft business is now extended and a stone ruin at the premises has been restored to original with stone masonry and thatch. This is a workshop/studio/mini museum. Here again you will be inspired by an authentic experience. You will practice weaving or dyeing by a peat fire. You will see the natural colours of the landscape emerge from the dye-port. There is always a sharing of skills and knowledge at the workshops.
One guest was so inspired by the idea of restoration that he came back with his family and restored the stone masonry of the proposed studio.
Flora believes in treating her guests with due care and attention in the way she would like to be treated on holiday. When this is combined with sharing her many skills and experience in a professional yet friendly and welcoming manner guests well-being is assured. Flora's philosophy has earned her friends from around the world in all age groups.
