Broch Of Gurness

Protected by three lines of ditch and rampart, the base of this broch is surrounded by a well organised Iron Age village. The internal fittings of all the buildings are of particular interest. Pictish house rebuilt to one side. Vikings may have built the long house on top of the ruined broch. The grave of a viking woman was found nearby.
Almost all of the site is accessible for visitors using wheelchairs or with limited mobility, but assistance is recommended. Stairs can be avoided by keeping to the grass slopes. The grass areas are mostly dry but help may be needed on some steeper slopes. It is not advised in wet weather. There is a three inch step into the shop/ticket office and the exhibition area has a small step.
There are many wildflowers and a quernstone for grinding which can be touched. The steward occasionally has spinning equipment at the site.
