Old Scatness

Most of the site is fully accessible to visitors

The original floor surfaces are covered to keep the archaeology secure and ensure the buildings are accessible to visitors. Your guide can take you into all the buildings where this work is complete.

Making pots

Making thumb pots which can be left onsite to be fired in our turf kiln

Pottery was the most abundant find during the excavation. Today visitors can make a pot to take away or leave it with us to be fired and be collected at the end of the season

Help grind grain to make flour

Processing bere barley

Preparing bere barley which we grow onsite. Significant quantities of bere were discovered during the excavation. This would have been an important food source in the Iron Age.
