Carving a replica bear similar to an original which was found onsite
A very detailed carving of a bear was discovered in one of the buildings during the excavation
Were there bears in Shetland? The carving suggests the artist has seen a real bear, but perhaps not in Shetland
Most of the site is fully accessible to visitors
The original floor surfaces are covered to keep the archaeology secure and ensure the buildings are accessible to visitors. Your guide can take you into all the buildings where this work is complete.
Making thumb pots which can be left onsite to be fired in our turf kiln
Pottery was the most abundant find during the excavation. Today visitors can make a pot to take away or leave it with us to be fired and be collected at the end of the season
Processing bere barley
Preparing bere barley which we grow onsite. Significant quantities of bere were discovered during the excavation. This would have been an important food source in the Iron Age.
Visiting craftspeople bring their knowledge and skills to Old Scatness
