Drumlanrig Castle

When William Douglas, the first Duke of Queensberry, built the magical pale pink castle of Drumlanrig, he created one of the finest stately homes in the world.
Set in the 120,000 acre Queensberry Estate, complete with a country park and Victorian gardens, this 17th century castle is one of the most important Renaissance buildings in the country.
The Dumfriesshire home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch, Drumlanrig Castle with its magnificent rooms and spectacular collections of silver, porcelain, French furniture and art – including Rembrandt’s Old Woman Reading - is perhaps one of the most rewarding and romantic of Scotland’s great houses. As well as the fantastic castle tours, beyond the house you can walk, cycle or mountain-bike on miles of clearly marked paths and off-road trails or spot the wealth of wildlife which live here.
The gardens extend to over 70 acres and include great formal parterres, dells, rockeries and charming summer houses as well as many impressive trees and a collection of rare shrubs from China.
The estate was once home to Kirkpatrick Macmillan, a local blacksmith who rode 60 miles to Glasgow on the first ever bicycle in 1839, and in Drumlanrig’s revamped bike museum you can see a replica of Macmillan’s pioneering invention as well as bikes from across the decades.
In the Stableyard you’ll find craft workshops and an excellent visitor centre. There’s also a thrilling adventure playground for little adventurers and bike hire is available. Alternatively, why not take an exhilarating Land Rover tour through the Buccleuch Kennels and Andy Goldsworthy’s Striding Arches? Fishing, canyoning, forest adventure activities and other country sports are also available.
No visit to Drumlanrig Castle would be complete without a trip to the castle tearoom, serving home baking using the freshest local produce, freshly brewed tea and coffee, cold drinks, light meals and our very own Estate reared meat and Drumlanrig herbs.
