Meikleour Beech Hedge

Meikleour Beech Hedge

Don't miss this incredible living wall of beech trees!
The Meikleour Beech Hedge, near Blairgowrie, is the longest hedge in Britain and listed as the highest of its kind in the world. Planted in 1745, the hedge is 530 metres (one third of a mile) long and 30 metres (100ft) high. And, as you would expect for the biggest beech hedge on the planet, it's in the Guinness Book of Records!
The story goes that the men who planted it were called away to fight in the Jacobite Rebellion and not one returned alive. To pay tribute to their memory the trees were allowed to grow to the heavens. The hedge is a living landmark and is particularly attractive; in the spring, when millions of young green leaves reflect the light; and, in the autumn, when the trees are a riot of russet and gold.
The hedge is cut and re-measured every 10 years, a complex operation that takes four men approximately 6 weeks to complete.
