Castle Kennedy & Gardens
_230x230.jpg)
Set in 75 acres of outstanding natural beauty on an isthmus between two natural lochs, these lavish gardens were laid out in 1730 around the magnificent ruins of Castle Kennedy.
Perfect for exploring, Castle Kennedy Gardens are internationally famous for their varied species of rhododendrons, including many of Sir Joseph Hooker's original introductions from his Himalayan expedition. These, along with a vast collection of azalias, magnolias and embrothriums give spectacular vibrancy in late May/June. Later follows the eucrythias, and yet more rhododendrons, and of course not forgetting the annual display of colour in the Walled Garden. In the autumn, the mature beech in the gardens against the beautiful backdrop of larch on the hills, as well as the carpet of snowdrops in late winter, altogether make a visit to the gardens a truly memorable experience.
Other features of interest include many spectacular champion trees (tallest or largest of their type), including six British, 11 Scottish and 24 Dumfries & Galloway champions. The gardens are also home to a wide variety of exotic trees and plants, a monkey puzzle avenue and the spectacular 2-acre circular lily pond.
Round off your day with a visit to the charming tearoom to enjoy delicious home baking or a light lunch. There is also a packed events calendar, a gift shop, a plant centre and children’s activities and facilities.
