Kinlochlaich Gardens
The gardens are set around Kinlochlaich House on the lower south facing slope of the hills overlooking Castle Stalker in the village of Appin. The original gardens were laid out in about 1790 by John Campbell of Lochend. They incorporate a fine hexagonal walled garden, informal plantings, spring garden and bluebell woodland walk selectively planted with rhododendrons, maples, magnolias, enkianthus, embothrium and more. The walled garden also includes a vegetable and fruit growing area.
Kinlochlaich Gardens are members of the Glorious Gardens of Argyll and Bute (www.gardens-of-argyll.co.uk) The gardens are situated half way between Oban and Fort William, 12 miles south of Glencoe.
The Garden Plant Centre commenced in 1976 and has developed over the years to offer one of the largest range of garden plants in Scotland. It must be one of the very few centres which actually uses a walled garden in which to demonstrate and display plants; most garden centres are shops without windows. Fiona Hutchison now runs the centre, with assistance from her father, Donald, who started the business back in the early days of the garden centre revolution.
The aim continues to be one of offering the best selection of garden plants, with sound horticultural knowledge and with specimens established around the grounds, displaying maturity and habit. New additions are sought continually and we continue to trial plants for suitability. It is pleasing that a historic walled garden is in full use.
Kinlochlaich House also offers comfortable self-catering accommodation, with lots of character, available throughout the year.
