Branklyn Garden

Branklyn Garden

Described as the finest two acres of private garden in the country, this oasis of peace and colour is a real urban haven. Hidden away on slopes of Kinnoull Hill, it is within walking distance of Perth. The original owners first started the transformation of a former orchard into a garden in 1922. Much of their work in trying to replicate the plants' growing conditions was pioneering and during the 1930s, they received a number of horticultural medals. The garden contains an extensive collection of many rare and unusual plants - among the most breathtaking are the Himalayan poppies, Meconopsis.

Seasonal highlights include the renowned collection of primulas, alpines and rhododendrons in May and June and in the autumn the garden comes to life with the fiery red Acer palmatum. The garden is predominantly a collection of plants from China, Tibet, Bhutan and the Himalayas. There is an impressive collection of original plants collected by famous plant collecting team Ludlow and Sheriff. We hold the National Collection of Cassiope, Mylnefield lilies and are working towards collections of other Lilies and Rhododendron section Taliensia, and Meconopsis. The garden presents the Trust with excellent opportunities to inspire its visitors and to demonstrate what can be achieve in a relatively small garden in an urban setting.
