Craig Rossie

Craig Rossie

Standing at the edge of the Ochil Hills, this handsome crag dominates the skyline to the south of Auchterarder and offers terrific views from the summit (1345ft/410m). The fertile sweep of Strathearn farmland stretches out for miles and, in the far distance, high mountains mark the Highland boundary fault line, as the landscape changes to more rugged terrain.
To reach the summit follow a gravel track past Pairney Farm through the quarry (home to rock ravens) and then south by a good path into Pairney Burn Glen. Gorse and bracken line the route, opening to high pasture, heather and blueberry. Clearly visible tracks lead to the smaller hill of Ben Effrey. This was once the site of a Pictish fort and, although now grass covered, the three ring defences of the ancient fort can still be clearly seen (best viewed looking back, from a distance). Reach the summit of neighbouring Craig Rossie by following a well worn route across grassy upland terrain.
Cars may be parked at Pairney Farm, near the start point for the walk up Craig Rossie. However parking is very limited and care must be taken not to obstruct access. Follow the Country Code at all times. Slightly further west on the B8062 there is a small layby which can also be used for parking.
