Paxton House, Gallery and Country Park

Paxton House, Gallery and Country Park

Award-winning Paxton House was built in 1758 to the design of John and James Adam for Patrick Home, Laird of Wedderburn and his intended bride, Sophie de Brandt, Lady in Waiting to Queen Elizabeth Christina of Prussia. Unfortunately Sophie never came to Paxton but the house still stands in all its glory and welcomes visitors to come and discover the whole story in this most romantic of Scottish Country Houses. The house boasts the pre-eminent collection of Chippendale furniture in Scotland and a fine collection of Regency furniture by William Trotter of Edinburgh. The largest picture gallery in a Scottish country house built by Robert Reid in 1814 houses over 70 paintings from the National Galleries of Scotland Here you will see masterpieces by Raeburn, Wilkie and Lawrence alsonside many works of local interest. The fully restored working Georgian kitchen is complete with active charcoal stoves and baking oven and cookery demonstrations can occasionally be seen here during the summer season. New to the house is the renovated Children's nursery, a visual insight into a child's room of previous years which includes an early Victorian cradle and Victorian doll as well as many more games and toys from the Victorian and Regency era's.

Overlooking the beautiful River Tweed, Paxton House lies at the heart of 80 acres of riverside, woodland, parkland and gardens. Visitors can enjoy a variety of walks and trails, excellent wildlife viewing hides for red squirrels, woodland and riverside birds, a croquet lawn and 9 hole putting green, picnic areas, 2 adventure playparks and a host of children's house and grounds competitions, nature trails and activities. The boathouse by the riverside originally built in 1848, houses a museum of salmon net fishing and in the courtyard, adjacent to the stables tearoom, there is prestigous Ellem Club Fishing museum (the worlds oldest club, formed in 1829) with full scale models, costumes, memorobilia and interactive computer displays. With all this plus the gift shop, licensed tearoom, gallery space, function suite and an ever changing event and exhibition programme, Paxton House is not just a country house but a fantastic day out for everyone!
