Manderston

Manderston

Channel 4s The Edwardian Country House and Number 8 in Channel 5's "Britains Finest"

Manderston, the home of Lord & Lady Palmer, is an Edwardian mansion set in 56 acres of formal gardens located just outside Duns in Berwickshire in the Scottish Borders, and 12 miles west of Berwick-upon-Tweed on the A6105. Manderstons buildings, park and gardens form an ensemble that is unique in Britain. It was built in 1905 for Sir James Miller by the architect John Kinross who, when he asked how much he could spend, was told it simply didnt matter, As a result the house shows a detail and quality of craftsmanship that is rarely seen., and incorporates all Edwardian modern conveniences (such as electricity and plumbing and central heating) Manderston offers sumptuous state rooms including a most charming and beautiful ball room, the only silver staircase in the world, marble floors and unexpected insights into life at the turn of the century both upstairs and downstairs. The original kitchens are particularly well designed for their time.

Manderston also houses a Biscuit Tin Museum of mainly Huntley and Palmer decorative tins. Outside, there are formal and woodland gardens, a stable block that has been described as the best in the world (it has often been mistaken for the main house) an octagonal Marble Dairy and tower, lakeside walks, tea room and gift shop. All combine to make this a memorable day out. The gardens are open until dusk, and visitors can walk round at their leisure and picnic in the grounds. Dogs are allowed in the grounds on leads. Coach parties welcome any day of the year. There is a Gift shop selling souvenirs and home made goods, and a tea room serves Edwardian teas on open days only.
