King Robert The Bruce's Cave

Whilst evading capture by English armies, Robert Bruce spent three months living a solitary existence in this cave, a stay that gave rise to a famous legend.
Born at Lochmaben Castle, Robert Bruce was Knight and Overlord of Annandale and was crowned King of Scots in 1306. After suffering defeat at the hands of the English in the winter of 1307, he took refuge in the cave and it was whilst there, in the depths of despair, Bruce noticed a spider attempting to build a web.
According to the legend, he watched the spider try repeatedly to spin its web until it eventually made the web, Heartened by the spider's tenacity in overcoming the obstacles before it, Bruce left the cave and subsequently raised an army which although often heavily outnumbered, fought a successful campaign against the English. This culminated in Bruce's historic victory at Bannockburn in 1314 which effectively secured independence for Scotland.
