Thomas Carlyle's Birthplace

Thomas Carlyle's Birthplace

A museum devoted to writer and historian Thomas Carlyle, one of the most influential thinkers in 19th-century Britain.

The Arched House in which Carlyle was born on 4 December 1795, was built four years previously by his father and uncle who were both master masons. The museum has been open to the public since 1883 and during that time has changed little meaning the house retains much of it original Victorian character and provides a fascinating insight into Scottish town life during 19th century.
Over three rooms, the museum displays a fascinating collection of portraits, together with a selection of Carlyle’s personal belongings.

Opening Hours

House open 22 April to 30 September, Friday-Monday, 1-5pm
