Thomas Carlyle's Birthplace

Carlyle was a great writer and historian and one of the most powerful influences on 19th century British thought. The Arched House, in which Thomas Carlyle was born on 4 December 1795, was built by his father and uncle (both master masons) in 1791. The interior of the house is furnished to reflect domestic life in Carlyle's time and contains a fascinating collection of portraits and some of Carlyle's belongings.
