The Tarmachan Ridge

The Tarmachan Ridge

The Tarmachan Ridge is the narrowest mountain ridge in Perthshire and is a rough and entertaining walk that takes in the Munro, Meall nan Tarmachan (Ptarmigan Hill, 3425ft,1044m). The rocky Tarmachan Ridge is situated just west of the largely grassy Ben Lawers Massif - an interesting contrast in terrain. For one of the best long distance views of the Tarmachan Ridge, drive north through Glen Ogle (just west of Lochearnhead). At the head of the glen, on a clear day, the Tarmachan Ridge and Ben Lawers burst into view. This is skyline drama on an epic scale.
Some 1300 hectares of The Tarmachan Range is in the care of the National Trust for Scotland and forms part of the Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve. See also the VisitScotland entry under Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve.

The best starting point for walkers is at a point just north west of the National Trust for Scotland Visitor Centre at Ben Lawers. A separate, smaller car park is visible where a bridge crosses a small stream.
