The Clan Armstrong Centre

Standing some 60ft high, this museum is the largest Armstrong Clan library in the world.
Situated in a remarkably good defensive position, and due to its remarkable height, Gilnockie Tower was an excellent place to watch for a raid from across the border. Today it still stands in all its splendor as the only habitable Armstrong tower left in existence from the original 80 - 90 towers in the Eskdale and Liddesdale area.
As well as offering a fascinating insight in to reiver history and an extensive library of rare books, during a visit here you can see a magnificent life-size model of Willie ‘Redcloak’ Bell, a reiver who was involved in the rescue of 'Kinmont' Willie Armstrong from Carlisle Castle in 1596. The model was made by a direct descendant of 'Redcloak', James R. Bell.
Guided tours take place during April to October at 2.30pm – please note to avoid disappointment it is advisable turn up at least 15 minutes before the tour starts.
