Museum of Lead Mining

Situated in the heart of Wanlockhead, Scotland’s highest village - 1531 ft/468.08m above sea level - the museum tells the story of how lead ore or 'galena' was extracted and the processes it went through to become the lead products that we know today.
The Museum of Lead Mining is unique in Scotland as it is the only former lead mine open to the public where you can see displays of some of the most spectacular minerals found in the Lowther Hills.
Follow the museum’s friendly and knowledgeable guides to uncover treasures including a genuine 18th century lead mine where you can experience the thrill of going underground. Make your way along the village paths to the two miners’ cottages and see how the miners really lived before exploring the second oldest subscription library in Europe, which has recently gained recognition status as being a collection of National Significance. Next, enter the visitor centre where you will discover a magnificent display of rocks, minerals, gold, mining and local artefacts. And during the months of July and August you can search for hidden gold by trying your hand at the ancient technique of gold panning.
Within the gift shop, you will find a great selection of gifts, books, toys, rocks and minerals and gold panning equipment.
Complete your visit with a trip to the tearoom to indulge in a delicious freshly baked scone, with a pot of tea or a coffee, or stay a while longer and choose from a wide selection of tasty meals, homemade soups, sandwiches and paninis.
