Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura

A treasure house of history set in an 18th century windmill, Dumfries Museum tells the story of the land and people of Dumfries & Galloway.
From fossil footprints left by prehistoric reptiles to the wildlife of the Solway marshes, the tools and weapons of the region’s earliest inhabitants to stone carvings of Scotland's first Christians, the museum offers a fascinating journey of discovery through the region’s history.
For a truly unique view of your surroundings, climb the steps to the top floor of the museum where you will find the Camera Obscura. Installed in 1836, this historic optical instrument - the oldest working instrument of its kind in the world – enables you to enjoy fascinating panoramic views over the town and the surrounding countryside and on clear days its range is many miles. Please note, the Camera Obscura is dependent on weather conditions to operate.
There are also fun activities for the whole family to enjoy as well as a gift shop packed with unusual and nostalgic toys, gifts and pocket money buys.
