Hay's Dock - The last remaining area of original dock on the Lerwick waterfront....
The B listed Hay's Dock was fully restored as part of the Museum and Archives project, providing a stunning entrance to the facility and unique opportunity to interpret Shetland's maritime heritage
Recycling and waste minimisation are at the heart of the Museum and Archives....
There are many recycled and reclaimed materials used within the Museum and Archives. One of the most impressive is the reception desk, made from the keel of a German boat dredged from Hay's Dock.

The Lower Gallery contains 6 thematic zones telling Shetland's story from its early geological beginnings to the 1800s.
From 'Early Beginnings' to 'Customs and Folklore'....
The lower gallery offers may highlights, including a model of Shetland's first known inhabitant, a traditional Shetland house, a Shetland cow, a Leatherback Turtle and a 'Trowie Knowe' - enter if you dare!
Boat Hall from the Lower Gallery
The Stunning Boat Hall contains the last surviving example of an original Sixareen, at floor level, with five other boats suspended above - some fully rigged.

The Boat Hall traces the history of the Shetland Boat from its Viking roots to the present day.

The Upper Gallery contains a further 6 thematic zones continuing Shetland's story from the 1800s to the present day.
Children's activities throughout the galleries...
There are children's discovery boxes situated throughout the gallery areas, which contain children's games and activities to do while visiting the Museum and Archives.
Interactives for all the family....
There are many interactive displays situated throughout the Gallery areas. Try your hand as designing a Fair Isle jumper, dating an archaeological site, fishing or piloting a boat into the harbour.

Hay's Dock Cafe Restaurant....
The Hay's Dock Cafe Restaurant offers panoramic views of the harbour and the best of local produce. The Cafe Restaurant also contains some destinctive design features, including bespoke tables inlaid with unique textiles by local craftmakers and wire lampshades which have been knitted in Shetland fine lace patterns.
Pick up a memento in the Shop....
Showcasing work by a number of Shetland craftmakers, the shop stocks a range of quality products inspired by and reflecting the isles' heritage and culture. Many products are also exclusive to the shop.
A Royal Opening....
The Shetland Museum and Archives was officially opened on the 31st May 2007 by Queen Sonja of Norway and the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay.
