The Auchindrain Trust

The Auchindrain Trust Image

Auchindrain is a very special place because it is the only surviving example of a Highland Farm Township that was not either abandoned or modernised.

Auchindrain gives visitors an authentic insight into how people lived, worked and played in the Old Highlands from the first records of about 1470 to 1962 when the last tenant retired from farming. Recognised as the only remaining complete example of a Highland Township where a group of families worked the land in common. Here you have a unique opportunity to see life as it was. Share the stories of the people who live here as tenants of the Duke of Argyll – MacCallums, MacNichols, Munros, Campbells, Stewarts and others. Set in the beautiful and dramatic Argyll landscape, the 21 acre site contains all the community’s buildings – houses, barns, byres, and stables. Wander through the township, see where the animals grazed and explore the longhouses where people and animals lived under one roof. Auchindrain: there’s nowhere like it in Scotland.
