Cree Valley Community Woodlands

The Cree Valley Community Woodlands Trust (CVCWT) was formed following discussions within a Galloway Forest Environment Panel meeting in 1998. The Panel recognised that there was a need for a coherent strategy to protect and enhance the valuable natural resource of broadleaf woodland within the Cree Valley. The management of a mosaic of habitats involving woodlands from 'source to sea' was set on course by community meetings, a feasibility study and the appointment of a Project Manager and administrative assistant.
The Cree Valley project is focused on the riparian woodlands of the River Cree and its tributaries in South West Scotland. It contains remnants of the former extensive ancient broadleaf woodlands. Once important in local industries, the woodland remnants are today recognised for their value in contributing to tourism, recreation and bio-diversity.
CVCWT enters into long term management agreements with private and public landowners to enhance bio-diversity and provide public access, especially in broadleaf woodland habitats. The total area of woodland habitat under management in 2005 is approximately 750 hectares. The main aim of the project is to develop a Forest Habitat Network (FHN) that has at its core the River Cree, with riparian corridors.
Management work has involved felling and extraction of conifers, selective felling of broad-leafs, felling of conifers within PAWS woodlands, broadleaf planting to extend the opportunity of providing woodland linkage, general woodland management, creation of wet woodlands and wetlands, stock and deer fencing, the provision of easy access paths, interpretation boards, leaflets and newsletters.
CVCWT has a number of active community partners and is a member of the Wigtownshire Local Rural Partnership (WLRP). The Trust is overseen by a Steering Group which consists of partner representatives and community members.
At the FCS Kirroughtree Visitor Centre, near Newton Stewart, CVCWT has equipped a forest classroom to assist in the delivery of the 5-14 Environment studies curriculum. The facility is used by local primary schools and the FCS Education Ranger staff.
