Red Moss of Balerno

The Red Moss of Balerno is one of only twenty raised peat bogs still surviving in the Lothians. The bog is 6 metres deep in places and has all the characteristics of a raised bog its domed top is covered by heather, cotton grass and varieties of sphagnum, with the drier margins fringed with trees. The Moss is continually under threat from invading birch and Scots pine which, if not cleared away at regular intervals, would gradually take over the area and change it from bog to woodland.
Care should be taken on the boardwalk as it is uneven in places, has low edges and can be slippery when wet. Please do not walk on the bog surface it is a fragile habitat and may be dangerous in places.
