Grey Mare's Tail Nature Reserve

A magnificent upland property of 870 ha (2,150 a), unfolding from the waterfall that cascades into the Moffat Valley up steep slopes to the post-glacial Loch Skene and its corries beyond. The summit of White Coombe (821 m) is the highest point. A landscape shaped by human activity since the Iron Age, it lies on a historic communications route and has strong connections with the Covenanters who sought sanctuary here in the 17th century.
The property is botanically outstanding and contains the richest collection of rare upland plants in southern Scotland; it is now a Special Area of Conservation. A Visitor Centre offers CCTV views of a peregrine falcon nest site and a panoramic view of hillside features. Programme of guided walks throughout the summer.
