Mersehead Nature Reserve

Mersehead Nature Reserve

Situated on the scenic north shore of the Solway coast, Mersehead Nature Reserve is an extensive wetland and saltmarsh area anda haven for breeding waders, wintering waterfowl and year-round bird and wildlife-watching.

Visit the fantastic visitor centre, stroll through the network of nature trails and spot wildlife from the discreet viewing hides.

Each season brings a different experience to the nature reserves. Spring is particularly magical, when the wet meadows fill with lapwings and skylarks, not to mention beautiful butterflies and carpets of wild flowers. In summer, look out for young birds making their first venture into the outside world and this is the best time of year to see mammals on the reserve including otters, badgers, roe deer and bats. Autumn brings migrating birds, including thousands of barnacle and pink-footed geese. In winter, you are almost guaranteed to see large flocks of birds gathering to feed, or flying at dusk to form large roosts to keep warm.
