Caerlaverock

With its moat, twin towered gatehouse and imposing battlements, Caerlaverock Castle is the epitome of the medieval stronghold.
Discover the turbulent history of Caerlaverock Castle by spending a day at the great medieval fortress. Look round the moat, twin-towered gatehouse and imposing battlements and visit the siege warfare exhibition to discover its important role in the defence of the realm.
The triangular shape of the castle is unique and a walk around it gives you a full sense of the strength, and form. Inside the walls, you can see the remarkable Nithsdale Lodging, built in the 1630s with its attractive façade and embellished with ornate Renaissance stone carvings which contrast well with the severity of the ancient castle walls.
After exploring the castle, the attractive waymarked walks lead you through ancient coppiced woodland and wetland to the adjacent National Nature Reserve.
The castle’s tearooms serve homebaking and a good selection of snacks and refreshments and makes an enjoyable end to your visit.
Visitors with a physical disability can see most of the ground floor and courtyard of the castle and a substantial part of the grounds. The visitor centre, shop and display area are wheelchair accessible. The nature trail in the nearby woodlands is not suitable for those using wheelchairs or visitors with limited mobility.
