Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve

Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve

The Central Highlands' highest mountain, Ben Lawers is 1,214m (3,984 ft) , with views from the Atlantic to the North Sea. In the Trust's care are 3,374 ha (8,339 a) of the southern slopes of the Lawers range and 1,348 ha (3,331 a) of the Tarmachan range, noted for a rich variety of the mountain plants and including Meall nan Tarmachan (1,044 m, 3,425 ft).

Birds including Raven, Ring Ouzel, Red Grouse, Ptarmigan, Dipper and Curlew. Nature trail and other areas are fenced to exclude sheep and deer to allow the restoration of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants; projects include pioneering work to restore treeline woodland habitats.

Audio-visual programmes with special version for children.

Few places in Britain can rival the unique range of mountain plants you find at Ben Lawers in Breadalbane above Loch Tay. The soils are unusually rich at high altitude, supporting a superb collection of arctic-alpine plants, and the reserve is pioneering the restoration of montane willow scrub.
