Dalzell Park
Dalzell Estate was originally a Royal hunting forest, landscaped in the 18th Century by Archibald Hamilton. The estate has many fine features including an oak said to have been planted in the 11th Century by King David the First of Scotland. The adjacant Arboretum was begun in the 19th Century and boasts one of the finest collections of indigenous and exotic trees anywhere in Scotland and includes excellent mature specimens of Wellingtonias, Spanish Chestnuts, Yews and Cedars of Lebanon.
Other features of the estate are the 1920s Japanese Gardens, the Rose Garden and the 'Fairy Ring', or Yew Arbour. The car park for the neighbouring RSPB bird reserve of Baron's Haugh is situated at the entrance of the estate. Please note that the mansion house of Dalzell is now private flats and is not open to the public.
