Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway

Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway

Visits Scotland's highest villages and enjoy a run on the narrow gauge railway which operates from Leadhills to Wanlockhead. Explore the lead mining museum at Wanlockhead and the oldest subscription library at Leadhills. Marvel at the skills of the lead miners who dug their shafts to below sea level and excavated miles of tunnels in their search for the lead ore and the silver it contained.

The railway has been built on the track-bed of the erstwhile Caledonian Railway branch line which ran from Elvanfoot to Wanlockhead and was opened in 1901 and closed in 1938. Look around the station at Leadhills and inspect our collection of locomotives which have all been preserved from the industrial world.

A friendly welcome awaits anyone who is willing to help occasionally and share the enjoyment of this worthwhile activity. There are jobs suitable for everyone.
