Mull of Galloway Visitor Centre
The building originally housed the workmen who built the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse in 1828 and was later extended to act as a byre for the lighthouse keepers. It was decided to utilise the derelict building which was renovated sympathetically to blend in with its surroundings, with the aim of keeping a balance between the needs of man and nature,and wildlife had to be the prime concern.
The Centre houses impressive audio and visual displays including a DVD of the local scenery and wildlife. Listen to the sounds of the birds which are common in the area, including the kittiwake, shag, gannet and puffin. There is also extensive information on the history and geology of the Mull of Galloway.
The Visitor Centre is run by donations alone and is managed jointly by the RSPB and the South Rhins Community Development Trust. An RSPB warden is at the Centre five days a week and as well as answering many wildlife questions, takes occasional guided tours around the reserve. Volunteers are at the Centre two days a week and help to ensure that visitors get information on the area, local facilities and services. Visitors should take the opportunity to walk around the Reserve and enjoy its peace and tranquility and experience the feeling of being at one with nature.
Within the building, provision has been made for toilet facilities with easy access for the disabled. There is car parking available on the perimeters of the Reserve and further access to the Visitor Centre can be made by car for the disabled through the gate.
Opening Hours
The Coffee Shop is open daily April - October 10am to 6pm. In November, February & March the opening times are 11am to 4pm.
The Lighthouse is open April to September Saturday and Sunday, plus Friday July & August 10am - 3.30pm. Adults £2, Children £1
