Cream O' Galloway Dairy Co Ltd

Cream o’ Galloway is one of the south west’s most popular tourist attractions and has won many awards since its creation in 1994. Based on Rainton Organic Farm near Gatehouse of Fleet, we combine the production of luxury ice-cream with a four-star visitor centre, including indoor and outdoor play areas, several miles of nature trails, cycle tracks and designated dog walk. The visitor centre also includes a restaurant area (our ‘Burger Barn’) with a selection of meals available, including our own organically raised beef.
As well as a variety of seasonal events we offer regular daily tours: ‘The Ice-Cream Experience’ takes visitors to a viewing gallery overlooking the factory for an insight into our production techniques, followed by the chance to taste up to twelve different flavours of ice-cream. This event lasts approximately 45 minutes and is held twice a day (11.30am and 1.30pm), with additional tours available during busy periods. ‘The Farm and Creamery Tour’ offers a broader introduction to our activities, taking visitors to the farm itself (including the milking parlour) and ending with the factory viewing gallery. This tour lasts approximately 1 ¼ hours, beginning at 2.45pm, and ends with an ice-cream!
Cream o’ Galloway and Rainton Farm have been lucky enough to win several awards over the years, recognising such things as our environmental commitment (2004 Thistle Award for Tourism & The Environment, Green Tourism Gold Award), our community involvement (regional and national winners of the Business in the Community Award, 2006) and our organic farming practices (BBC Food and Farming Awards “Farmer of the Year” 2006). Proprietor Wilma Finlay was honoured with an MBE in 2006 for services to tourism in Scotland. We’ve even won awards for our packaging design!
Both our environmental and community commitments received a boost this year with the construction of the Community Wind Turbine on our land. This 25m wind turbine is owned by Gatehouse of Fleet, from whom we purchase the electricity it produces. The proceeds from the sale help to fund community projects, and the use of wind power helps us to reduce our ‘carbon footprint’ – everybody wins. Visitors have access to the turbine and are welcome to get up close and personal – it’s already become quite a conversation piece.
