Monymusk Arts Centre

Monymusk Arts Centre

This beautiful little Georgian building is open daily for five months during the summer with watercolours, oils, pastels, photography and landscapes – plus a fine selection of local crafts and souvenirs for sale. Art exhibitions change every two weeks and there is a unique map display of the 18th century landscape at Monymusk. The Grant Arms Hotel was an 18th century Coaching Inn and has a Lounge Bar and a la carte restaurant. The Walled Garden is open daily selling herbaceous border and bedding plants, trees, shrubs, garden furniture and much more from the original Georgian garden for the House. The 12th century Parish Church of St Mary’s is open by appointment. There are short walks around the village and garden, a playground outside the village hall and something for everyone to enjoy at Monymusk.

The Centre was opened by Lady Aberdeen in May 1990 after four years’ community effort in restoring this beautiful little Georgian building. In summer there are visiting art exhibitions, craft workers are in residence daily through the summer and sell a huge variety of local handmade crafts. Concerts are held on winter afternoons from October to April and the Centre has established a reputation for its wonderful acoustics, attracting musicians of outstanding ability. Please view www.artstrust.org for details and further information.
Monymusk has been inhabited since the Stone Age. It was converted to Christianity in the 5th century and the parish church of St Mary’s was once part of an Augustinian Priory (11th-16th century).
The picturesque village square dates from the 18th century with the old Post Office shop and Grant Arms Hotel. Behind and to one side are the Old Policemans House, the Library, Shoe Shop and The Old Bakery.
The surrounding countryside was largely created in the 1700’s by Sir Archibald Grant, the most advanced Scottish agriculturalist in his day, his work was 50 years ahead of his time and Monymusk retains all the old charm of an unspoilt Scottish village.
Please view www.monymusk.org for a fuller history of Monymusk.
