Mill on the Fleet
Built in 1788 as a cotton spinning mill and restored as a visitor and exhibition centre the 1980s, the Mill on the Fleat houses the recently restored Faed Gallery which runs a packed programme of exhibitions by local artists and craft makers.
The main exhibition floor houses displays focusing on the history and heritage of Gatehouse, the Fleet Valley National Scenic Area, and surrounding districts. The mill lade system is explained in a fascinating working model and the town of Gatehouse itself can be seen in miniature as it would have looked in 1800.
Head to the second floor, to listen to classical music as you browse the superb range of new and second hand books for adults and children on the shelves of the Anwoth Bookshop, and don’t leave without visiting the Riverside Café. Serving delicious snacks, sandwiches, light meals and drinks all day on the riverside terrace it is an idyllic way to round off your visit.
Other facilities and features include a shop offering a wide choice of high quality souvenirs, greeting cards and Scottish crafts, a picnic area, audio wands, family activities, special events and exhibitions, talks and guided walks.
