New Abbey Cornmill
This fully restored water-powered corn mill offers visitors a wonderful insight into Scottish rural life in years gone by.
Situated in the pretty village of New Abbey and under the care of Historic Scotland, this three-storey whitewashed mill building was built towards the end of the 18th century by the Stewarts of nearby Shambellie House. However, it is thought that it reaches back much later than that, perhaps to as early as the late 13th century, when the Cistercian monks established their monastery of Dulce Cor (‘Sweet Heart’ ) at the far end of the village; today the mill is still known locally as ‘Monks’ Mill’.
The mill is still in full working order and on most summer day visitors can see it run as it would have all of those years ago. However, on days when water is in short supply, or when the mill is not running, you can still see the mill in action through the Historic Scotland video production ‘The Miller’s Tale’.
The waterwheel and grounds are accessible for visitors with physical disabilities. Access to the corn mill is difficult for wheelchair users and access to the upper floors is not possible.
