The Pier Arts Centre

The Pier Arts Centre in Stromness houses a remarkable collection of 20th Century British Art. The collection charts the development of modern art in Britain and includes key works by Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo among others.
The Centre's founder, Margaret Gardiner (1904-2005) was a close friend of many of the artists represented in the Pier Gallery Collection and her decision to give a large part of her personal collection to the people of Orkney led to the opening of the Centre in 1979. The Gallery also presents a changing programme of local, national and international exhibitions and events.
The Centre has been recently undergoing a massive refurbishment. On it's opening in Spring 2007 it will include a number of exhibition spaces to house a new permanent display of the best of Orkney art from Stanley Cursiter to the present day and an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions.
Other features the redeveloped Centre will provide include: a welcoming and friendly environment for all sectors of he community to enjoy the Centre and it's activities free of charge; the highest standard of care of the collection; newly developed links to schools, colleges and other organisations and communities throughout the islands and beyond; a new gallery shop and many other exciting features. These will all be housed within a landmark building of architectural excellence enhancing the historic town of Stromness.
Together all these factors provide a pleasurable and entertaining experience for the visitor to the Pier Arts Centre.
