Pass of Killiecrankie

Pass of Killiecrankie

"The Pass is extremely narrow between high mountains, with the Garry running beneath in a deep, dark fome, and a rocky channel overhung with trees, forming a scene of horrible grandeur" wrote Thomas Pennant in 1769. At one time the Pass of Killiecrankie was notorious amongst travellers as one of the most arduous and dangerous routes in Scotland.

Today, this impressive wooded gorge is one of Perthshire's best loved beauty spots and a popular location for walkers and naturalists. There are a number of easily accessible trails by the River Garry through fine oak and deciduous woodland, rich in wildlife. The name Killiecrankie is derived from the Gaelic for 'Wood of the Aspen' although few aspen remain today. Autumn colours are particularly spectacular, with the view along the Pass from the Garry Bridge being one of the most photographed in Perthshire. The gorge is a Site of Special Interest and lies within the Tummel National Scenic Area.

The Killiecrankie Visitor Centre (NTS) is located above the gorge and features information on the outstanding beauty of the area and the bloody Jacobite battle fought here in 1689. The centre is open from Easter to October and offers a programme of guided walks throughout the season. Remote camera links at the centre enable sight of nestling woodland birds at close range. The gorge and walking trails are accessible all year.
