South Carrick Trails

South Carrick Trails

The South Carrick Trails consist of five paths, ranging from cosy family strolls, to scenic hikes for ambitious walkers.
Changue Forest Trail takes you through the heart of Changue, which is now a commercial forest in its many stages of development. Continuing up the Howe of Laggan gives an excellent view of the Polmaddie Hill Group, which rises to over 1800 feet. Looking northeast, you can see the well known "Nick of the Balloch", which was famous in the olden times as a mountain pass commonly used by smugglers. Although Changue Trail is a cycling route, hikers will most definitely find it a worthwhile walk.
The Dinmurchie Trail combines forest and open hills, and it gives a marvellous view of the picturesque village of Barr. If you are lucky, you may see some of the forest wildlife such as deer, fox, hare, kestrels and buzzards. Continuing forward leads on to Barr, which has a considerable Covenanting history.

Fairy Knowles Trail passes through attractive waterfalls and pools, and Kirstie's Trail follows the delightful Water of Gregg.
Following the Devils Trail leads to the "Devil's Footprints", which, as legend has it, was the site of a battle between the Laird of Changue and the Devil. To defend himself, the laird placed his Bible at his feet and drew a circle in the dirt around him using his sword. And, if you look carefully, you can still see the devil's footprints, the circle drawn by the sword and the mark of the bible in the grass.
The car park at the start of the trails is 1km east of Barr (follow signs for "Trails Car Park"). The colour-coded circular paths are easily followed with direction signs and way marker posts. Most paths are moderate, but some sections may involve some steep climbing.
The trails are well maintained and operated by South Ayrshire Council.
