Tor of Craigoch - Agnew Monument and Iron Age Hillfort

This castellated monument is built on the site of an Iron Age hillfort known as the Tor of Craigoch. It was built in 1850 in memory of Sir Andrew Agnew of Lochnaw Castle.
Sir Andrew Agnew was once an MP for Wigtownshire as well as leader of the Teetotal and Sunday Observance societies.
As you follow the footpath leading up to the monument you cross over the collapsed walls of the Iron Age hillfort. These walls are now reduced to a spread of stones hidden in the gorse and beautiful rhododenrons but they once formed two massive ramparts encircling the hill.
The view across Loch Ryan is magnificent and shows the strategic and defensive importance of the site. Close to the road, just beyond the car park, are some ruined concrete buildings (no public access); these are the rains of a Second World War anti-aircraft gun battery, one of a series built to protect the loch. To the south, marked by a telecommunications mast, is Cairn Pat, the site of another Iron Age fort.
