Portpatrick - Old Church

St Andrew's Kirk was built in 1629 - look for the date inscribed on a stone outside the chancel. The circular tower is earlier and may be medieval; its shape is unusual and it has been suggested that it once served as a lighthouse.
Portpatrick owes its origins to trade with Ireland and there are some wonderful monuments in the graveyard to local sailors, sea captains and customs officers. There are also memorials to local wrecks including one recording the loss of the Orion, which sank close to the harbour in 1850 with the loss of 60 lives.
