Portpatrick - Old Church

Portpatrick - Old Church

St Andrew's Kirk was built in the 16th century, however, the circular tower was created earlier and is thought to be medieval.

The circular its shape is unusual and it has been suggested that it once served as a lighthouse.

Portpatrick owes its origins to trade with Ireland and there are some wonderful monuments in the graveyard to local sailors, sea captains and customs officers. There are also memorials to local wrecks including one recording the loss of the Orion, which sank close to the harbour in 1850 with the loss of 60 lives.
