Lincluden Collegiate Church

Lincluden Collegiate Church

This 11th-century collegiate church was once a priory of Benedictine nuns.

In 1389, Archibald, 3rd Earl of Douglas, better known as Archibald the Grim of Threave Castle, was granted permission by the Pope to replace the original priory with a collegiate church (whose chief function was to pray for the souls of their rich benefactors).

The splendid chancel is thought to have been added by his son Archibald, the 4th Earl, along with the exquisite monumental tomb of his wife, Princess Margaret, daughter of Robert III. However, during the Reformation, the church was attacked and badly damaged by Protestant reformers.

Today the magnificent ruins are under the care of Historic Scotland. The walls of the choir are mainly complete, and contain some fine examples of decorative stonework. Lady Margaret's tomb and the nearby door to the sacristy are awe inspiring and at the far north end, the church’s tallest tower is still standing.
