Cruck Cottage

Cruck Cottage Cruck Cottage Thumbnail Image

Once these cottages were commonplace but now this charming little building is a great rarity. Simply constructed on 3 massive oak cruck frames, fastened together with only oak pegs, thatched, lime washed and earth floored, the cottage was lived in till the 1960's. It then fell into disrepair and was restored by Solway Heritage in 1990 using the same traditional skills and local materials.

One of the advantages of Cruck Framing was that the side walls, whether of mud or clay, turf or inferior rubble were merely for cladding and not for weight bearing. The weight of the roof was borne by the crucks generally springing from around ground level.

The roof was re-thatched in the Summer of 2004
