Cruck Cottage

Unique to the Tortherwold area, this unusual style of cottage used to be commonplace but this charming building, which dates back to medieval times, is one of the rare surviving examples.
Constructed on three massive oak cruck frames fastened together with oak pegs, thatched, lime washed and earth floored, Cruck Cottage was inhabited until the late 1960’s. Having fallen into disrepair, the cottage was restored by Solway Heritage in 1990 using traditional skills and local materials and it now provides a beautiful glimpse into a bygone age and the craftsmanship required in building these cottages.
The cottage can be viewed at any time and a list of local key holders is displayed in the window of the cottage.
