Holmwood House

Holmwood has been described as the finest domestic design by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson
It was built in 1857-8 for James Couper,
who, with his brother Robert, owned Millholm Paper Mills on the banks of the River Cart, below the house.
The architectural style of the house is a picturesque adaptation of classical Greek. Many rooms are richly ornamented in wood, plaster and marble.
Thanks to investigation by Historic Scotland, Thomsons original rich decoration, based on themes from the classical world, is beginning to emerge. Much of the original stencilled decoration has been found, and visitors may follow the progress of continuing conservation work. The small kitchen garden is planted with a range of Victorian herbs, fruit and vegetables and the house is surrounded by wildflower-rich woodland. Audio tour, CD-ROM.
