David Livingstone Centre

David Livingstone Centre

Find out more about Scotland's most famous explorer, who was born here in 1813.

Today the 18th-century tenement commemorates David Livingstone's life and work. His childhood home consisting of just one room remains much as it would have been in his day and gives visitors an insight into the living conditions endured by industrial workers in the 19th century.

The rest of the museum tells the story of Livingstone's explorations in Africa, with many of his personal belongings and travel aids, including diaries, navigational equipment and even the famous red shirt he was wearing when he met the journalist H M Stanley.

Exhibition; sculpture of Livingstone and the Lion; picnic area; adventure playground

Opening Hours

1 April to 24 December, daily 10-5 (Sunday 12.30-5)
