Kilmartin House

Kilmartin House

The area around Kilmartin contains more than 350 ancient monuments, 150 of which are prehistoric. The extraordinary concentration and of monuments; rock carvings, standing stones, Neolithic and Bronze Age burial cairns; and Dunadd; the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Dalriada; distinguish the Kilmartin valley as Scotland's richest prehistoric landscape.
It is also environmentally important: the Moine Mhor, or Great Moss is a rare expanse of raised mire, and the Crinan estuary, apart from its outstanding natural beauty, is a living example of a coastal wetland ecosystem. Kilmartin House exists as a focus for the celebration and study of this unique environment, through its internationally-acclaimed archaeological museum. which uses artifacts from nearby ancient sites, reconstructions and interactive displays to examine the intricate relationship between the ancient landscape and its people over 5,000 years. A captivating audio-visual presentation The Valley of Ghosts, explores the enigmatic world of our ancestors with breath-taking imagery and haunting music. A fine bookshop retailing publications and gift ideas exclusive to Kilmartin House, and a splendid café specializing in natural, local produce compliment the overall experience. The entire operation is owned and run by a non-profit making registered charitable trust, which means that profits are reinvested for future cultural service provision. Admission tickets are valid for the entire day, and visitors are free to come and go as they please - interspersing visits to the museum with explorations of the monuments themselves.
The village of Kilmartin is only 2 hours drive from Glasgow International Airport, and 40 minutes from Oban: either way visitors will travel some of the most scenic routes Scotland has to offer. Locally there is a comprehensive range of accommodation, first-class restaurants and bars, and a wide choice of year-round holiday activities.
