Loch an Eilein,is situated on the Rothiemurchus Estate which has belonged to the Grant family for four hundred years. Explore the paths around the loch and catch a glimspse of the dramatic castle ruin on a small island. Originally a Comyn stronghold dating back to the 13th Century. The home of the 'The Wolf of Badenoch' real name Alexander Stewart the fourth son of King Robert II who was said to be one of the most evil characters in Scottish History. In 1390 he burnt down Elgin Cathedral.
The very old pine trees that you pass would have been saplings in Bonny Prince Charlie's day. Bird watchers should look our for rarer species which include crested tits, scottish crossbills and tree creepers.
