Rounall Wood

Rounall Wood

Nestling in the outskirts of the town and located between the golf course and the cemetery, Rounall Wood is one of Dalbeattie's best kept secrets. If you are looking for a quiet place to walk your dog or somewhere for the children to explore Rounall Wood is the place to visit.

Lasting approximately one hour this easy circular walk should suit most walking abilities. Although there are some steeper gradients the route is also suitable for accompanied and more able wheelchair users. It is recommended that the trail is travelled in a clockwise direction.

The granite exposed in Rounall Wood is a hard speckled rock that has been quarried for its durable qualities. The granite in Rounall Wood was tested as early as the 1870's but it was not until 1901 that the stone was quarried. By 1922 the quarry was no longer in use and the owner, Mr Maxwell, gifted Rounall Wood to the town's people. A new pleasure park was proposed and the improvement works were undertaken during the decades that followed.

Ornamental shrubs were planted among the rocky outcrops and a formal rose garden was constructed. Eighty years later, the formal park has been transformed into a more natural woodland where visitors can spot local wildlife and explore its rocky features.

Many mammals such as roe deer and badger are known to use the wood together with the common buzzard who is a regular visitor to the wood. The best time to look out for bats, such as pipistrelle and brown long-eared, is on a fine summer evening when they can be seen silhouetted against the sky.
