The Buccleuch Estates Limited
Picturesquely situated at the foot of the Queensberry Hills and the River Nith Drumlanrig Castle and Country Park are the home of the Duke of Buccleuch.
Set in the 120,000 acre Queensberry Estate, complete with a Country Park and Victorian Gardens, this 17th century castle is one of the most important Renaissance buildings in the country.
As well as the fantastic castle tours, beyond the house you can walk, cycle or mountain-bike on miles of clearly marked paths and off-road trails or spot the wealth of wildlife which reside here - including red squirrels.
The gardens extend to over 70 acres and include great formal parterres, dells, rockeries and charming summer houses as well as many impressive trees and a collection of rare shrubs from China.
The estate was once home to Kirkpatrick Macmillan, a local blacksmith who rode 60 miles to Glasgow on the first ever bicycle in 1839, and in Drumlanrig’s revamped bike museum you can see a replica of Macmillan’s pioneering invention as well as bikes from across the decades.
In the Stableyard you’ll find craft workshops and an excellent visitor centre. There’s also a thrilling adventure playground for little adventures and bike hire available from Rik’s Bike Shed. Alternatively, why not take an exhilarating Land Rover tour through the Buccleuch Kennels and Andy Goldsworthy’s Striding Arches? Fishing, canyoning, forest adventure activities and other country sports are also available.
